Dressing Up Your Windows!

By Helen M Green

Having the 'right' window dressing can be the difference between a great interior design and an OK one! A fatal error made by many people is to redecorate a room, fill it with wonderful furniture, personal belongings and then put up a window dressing that is completely out of context!

There are so many different types of window dressing around that there really is no excuse for forgetting to incorporate curtains, blinds or a combination of both which coordinated well into the room's design style and colour theme.
The type of window dressing you chose will depend on a number of factors. The size or the room, the size of the window or windows and how much natural light is available.

To have cohesion and a sense or order the majority of windows should blend effortlessly into the scheme of the room. The except to the unsaid rule is if you have a window or windows which are of unusual shape or provide stunning scenic views. These should be used to their full advantage and be a focal point of the room.

Windows which are not a conventional shape can be tricky. Finding suitable window dressings which are also practical can pose a real problem. Beautiful arched shapes look great with elegant full length curtains which are swept back during the daytime. Fantastic goblet headings offer a chic look, offering a striking appearance when used with curtains made from heavy and medium weight curtains.

Softly falling voile materials are gracious and beautiful, ideal for using on long tall windows which are not over looked by neighbours! Tall windows can also look stunning when dressed with blinds-they can also be far easy to close than conventional style curtains.

Blinds are the perfect solution for virtually all shapes and sizes of windows. They can be custom made to fit tricky shapes, made to measure of a perfect fit to conventional styles of windows and sizes or simply bought ready made for convenience.

The use of blinds continues to become an increasingly popular way to dress a window. There is a style and colour to suit all interior styles and colours. They offer the ideal alternative to traditional net curtains if privacy is needed. They are also very easy to operate and allow complete control over the amount of light entering a room.

Large windows can be dressed with a combination of both blinds and curtains. Having a coordinating or contrasting blind fitted into the recess of the window enables curtains to be hung from poles or tracks fitted onto the outside edges. Elegant curtains with swags and tails can be left swept open to keep their immaculate look, while privacy during the day or night can be achieved with a blind.

If you think blinds are 'boring' take a look at Beat Blind by William Gurley. This wooden blind can be played in a similar way as a xylophone when pulled.

Image the fun kids would have if a Beat Blind was fitted to their bedroom window!
