Tips For Riding Your Motorcycle in Rainy Weather

By Matt LeClair

Riding a motorcycle is challenging enough as it is because of the level of difficulty that it presents and the amount of skill and ability that is required when doing so. Add a little rain into the mix and you've got an even more difficult driving situation that requires extra care and attention. Here are some tips for riding your motorcycle in the rain.

The first thing to remember when riding in the rain is that your motorcycle will have less traction because of the water that will be present on the road. This presents an increased urgency to pay attention to the speed at which you are traveling. The faster you go, the less traction you'll have, and the more likely you are to hydroplane. If you have to ride in the rain, slow down and take your time to allow for maximum traction in the wet conditions. Be sure to drive on the highest part of the road and avoid tire grooves at all cost if possible. Water will accumulate in these areas which will provide an increased risk of hydroplaning if you happen to drive over them.

Motorcycles are already at a disadvantage when it comes to visibility because of their size. Factor in the decreased level of visibility because of the rain and you are at even more of a disadvantage. This is where it is critical that all of your lights are working properly.

When you ride your motorcycle, you expose yourself to the elements, and rain is just one of those elements that can put a damper on an enjoyable trip if you are not prepared. You'll want to make sure you have the proper rain gear to keep yourself dry and warm in rainy conditions. This can also help keep your stress level down somewhat, which will prevent you from becoming distracted and inattentive due to being wet from the rain. If you see that there is a chance for rain, be sure to have the proper gear, not just a motorcycle jacket.

Finally, the best advice anyone can give when it comes to riding your motorcycle in the rain is to simply avoid it if at all possible. Your chances of a having a bad experience will driving in the rain will be eliminated if you don't have to put yourself in the situation in the first place. If you have no choice though, slow down, make sure you have your rain gear, and you'll be just fine.

How Does Diabetes Affect My Body?

by Amy Adams, MS

People with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes are at a much higher risk than the general population for damage to the eyes, kidney, nerves, and blood vessels. Because of these serious risk factors, the American Diabetes Association recommends regular screening for early signs of damage. Many of these side effects can be delayed or avoided altogether through careful blood sugar control. In addition, a recent study has found that lowering blood sugar levels also lowers treatment costs for people with Type 2 diabetes.(For news about addition risks associated with high blood sugar levels, see Related News below.)

How does Blood Sugar Cause Damage?

I n people with diabetes, sugar (glucose) accumulates in the blood to very high levels. The excess glucose can attach toproteins in the blood vessels and alter their normal structure and function. One effect of this is that the vessels become thicker and less elastic, making it hard for blood to squeeze through.

Measuring Long-Term Blood Sugar Levels

Doctors can measure how much sugar has bound to proteins over a three to four month period using a glycated hemoglobin test. This test measures the amount of sugar that is attached to hemoglobin — a protein in red blood cells. Hemoglobin circulates in the blood for about three months, so by looking at the amount of sugars that have attached to hemoglobin, doctors have a good indication of how much sugar has bound to other proteins. This is an indication of your overall blood sugar control for that period of time. If the hemoglobin carries a lot of glucose, then there's a good chance that proteins in blood vessels have suffered some damage as well. On the other hand, hemoglobin without much bound sugar means that you had good blood sugar control and have a lower risk of tissue damage. Individuals with diabetes should have their hemoglobin screened several times a year to make sure their treatment plan is working.

Eye Damage

Diabetic eye disease starts when blood vessels in the back of the eye (the retina) balloon out into pouches. Although this stage — called nonproliferative retinopathy — generally does not affect vision, it can progress to a more serious form called proliferative retinopathy. This occurs when damaged blood vessels close off and new, weaker vessels take their place. These new vessels can leak blood, which blocks vision. They can also cause scar tissue to grow and distort the retina.

Because the retina can be irreversibly damaged before you notice any change in vision, and because retinopathy can be effectively treated with lasers to minimize vision loss, the American Diabetes Association recommends screening for retinopathy yearly.

Kidney Disease

Kidney disease starts when the blood vessels in the kidney become leaky. These leaky vessels allow protein from the blood to be excreted with urine. (It's this protein that doctors detect when they test for kidney function.) Eventually, some vessels collapse and place more pressure on those that remain. Under this increased load, the remaining blood vessels are also damaged and the kidney may fail. If the disease progresses to this point, a person may have to go on dialysis — where a machine performs the role of the kidney — or receive a kidney transplant.

Because of the serious consequences of kidney disease, the American Diabetes Association recommends screening for protein in the urine every year starting at the time of diagnosis, or five years after the diagnosis in Type 1 diabetics.

Heart and Blood Vessel Disease

High blood sugar damages blood vessels and can lead to blockage. In the heart, this blockage can cause heart attacks. In fact, people with diabetes have two to four times the risk of developing heart disease or stroke than the general population. Blocked vessels in the legs can cause pain and can also impair circulation. With poor circulation, small cuts or infections are less likely to heal. Eventually, 0.6 percent of all diabetics have lower limb amputations because of damage to the feet or lower legs.

Nerve Disease

In diabetes, the nerves that become damaged are the ones that allow you to sense temperature, pressure, texture, or pain on your skin. In most people with diabetes, nerve disease (neuropathy) effects the feet and lower legs, causing numbness or tingling. The real problem arises when numbness allows injuries to the foot to go unnoticed. For this reason, the American Diabetes Association recommends that all people with diabetes have a thorough foot exam every year.

How to Prevent Your Children From Getting Fat and Obese

Children are prone to have an overweight built. They are vulnerable to this situation especially when parents do not have their time to watch their children. Sometimes these obesity cases are due to their obese parents too, it is important that the family observes a positive family lifestyle. There are ways to prevent children obesity; some examples of these are as follows:

Encouraging your children to have a more active lifestyle

Practicing a regular form of exercise is basically a crucial part for children and adults to engage with. The general cause of kids being obese in today's generation than the past is that the children today spends most of their time inactive. In today's generation, video game consoles are the things keeping the kids busy not like in the past where kids are engaged to physical activities like sports. They more spend their time sometimes biking and like more to be physically active.

Parents can help solve this problem by pursuing the kids to practice exercises with them. Engaging the whole family to exercise will gain family bonding and at the same time the whole family would enjoy doing. You can also take them to a local pool or even encourage them to play ball like tennis or simply walking the dog around the neighborhood for a couple of hours.

The solution has to begin breaking bad habits such as spending most of the time playing videos or watching TV and instead go out and ride a bike together. It will be a perfect time spending moments together as a family.

Encourage a Smaller Portion of Food Shares

Sometimes it is not the type of foods that the children are eating causes their being overweight. Most of the time, it is the food size they are consuming. Most of the families use a large plate which has a big space for the food to accumulate. All you have to do is to replace these plates with a normal sized plate to retain the accurate portion for your children to consume.

The 5 Best Fat Burning Diet Plans

Losing weight means combining the best fat burning diet with regular exercise to help burn off even more fat. When you combine the right foods with exercise, you can see the weight come off more easily than you ever thought. Here are some diets that can help you combine exercise and fat burning foods for effective weight loss.

The 5 Most Successful Fat Burning Diet Plans

1. Low Carbohydrate -

Diets like Atkins and South Beach are effective because they help burn a large amount of belly fat in a short amount of time. The secret to this fat burning diet is that by not allowing your blood sugar level to spike, your body uses stored fat for energy.

Just remember to eat as wide a variety of foods as you're allowed, load up on vegetables and don't stay on the most restrictive phase of the diet too long.

2. Low Fat

Low fat diets can help burn fat for the simple reason that the fats we consume are typically more calorie dense than other calories. Therefore, if we lower the fat, we lower the calories we eat.

Just be careful when choosing foods that are labeled low fat or fat free. Sometimes food manufacturers add in extra sugar to compensate for the flavor lost when the fat is removed. The result is that you are consuming just as many calories, which won't help you burn fat.

3. The White Diet

This fat burning diet is a modified version of the low carbohydrate diet, but is not quite as severe. You basically eliminate all white foods from your diet.
These include sugar, white flour, white rice and potatoes, and eat a moderate amount of the allowable foods, combined with regular exercise.

4. Low Calorie Diets

On a low calorie fat burning diet, you can eat virtually whatever you want, within your daily calorie limits.

Such fat burning diets are tried and true standbys, but they do require you to count calories every day. You'll choose your calorie range based on your height, activity level and gender.

Even though you can eat anything on these diets, it's still best to stick to lean meats, lots of vegetables and fruits as your mainstay, so that you don't feel too hungry as you lose weight.

5. Very Low Calorie Diets

This fat burning diet is exactly like low calorie diets, except that the calorie limits are lower. We mention these separately because they have some important caveats. These diets are reserved for those who are very overweight and under the supervision of a doctor.

People who have only a moderate amount of weight to lose may actually slow their metabolism so much by drastically reducing their calories that they don't lose any weight at all.

Remember to include some natural fat burning foods into your weight loss plan as well.

Lose 40 Pounds in 2 Weeks - Can it Really Be Done?

I was recently asked how it was possible to lose 40 pounds in 2 weeks. It seems that when it comes to weight loss, no expectation is too extreme or exaggerated. No wonder so many scammy weight loss products are sold day after day and leave people poorer but not thinner. People will believe practically any claim.

I won't go into a scientific discussion of the kind of calorie burning you need in order to lose 40 lbs in 2 weeks. It is plain that this is a huge weight loss in a very short time. I doubt that even extreme weight loss methods will be able to help you achieve it.

However, let's talk about what you may experience if you try to lose 40 pounds in 2 weeks:

You will need to use an extreme method, something that would entail a very low calorie consumption and an increased calorie burn rate. You will need to restrict what you eat and to train extremely hard to actually believe yourself that this is something that may happen.

At first, you may see your weight drop off quite a bit. However, before you get too excited, please remember that this is likely to be mostly water weight. You're not going to be burning a lot of body fat. Even this liquid weight loss will hardly be enough to get you close to being 40 pounds lighter. It may give you the illusion that this is indeed possible.

This kind of drastic calorie reduction is likely to cut into your muscle tissue and not just your fat. If you continue with it too long, your muscles will start to be eaten away as your body won't be able to sustain them any longer. This will lower your metabolism, stall your weight loss, and set the stage for a bounce in your weight as you rebound.

This is all due to your impatience and the need to try to lose weight in a crazy and unrealistic way. The true way to shed weight is to do it with sensible and logical goals and methods. Yes, you can lose weight quickly. You can achieve fast results. Just keep within the logical boundaries. Trying to lose 40 pounds in 2 weeks isn't very logical.

Choose a diet program that will help you achieve long term results. You will be happier with results that last for years than for those that last a week.

How your Apple iPhone spies on you

Criminals using the Apple iPhone may be unwittingly providing police with a wealth of information that could be used against them, according to new research.

By Tom Leonard in New York

Published: 08 Jul 2010

As the communications device grows in popularity, technology experts and US law enforcement agencies are devoting increasing efforts to understanding their potential for forensics investigators.

While police have tracked criminals by locating their position via conventional mobile phone towers, iPhones offer far more information, say experts.

"There are a lot of security issues in the design of the iPhone that lend themselves to retaining more personal information than any other device," said Jonathan Zdziarski, a former computer hacker who now teaches US law enforcers how to retrieve data from mobile phones.

"These devices organise people's lives and, if you're doing something criminal, something about it is going to go through that phone." Apple has sold more than 50 million iPhones since the product was launched in 2007.

Mr Zdziarski told The Daily Telegraph he suspected that security had been neglected on the iPhone as it had been intended as a consumer product rather than a business one like rivals such as the Blackberry.

An example was the iPhone's keyboard logging cache, which was designed to correct spelling but meant that an expert could retrieve anything typed on the keyboard over the past three to 12 months, he said.

In addition, every time an iPhone's internal mapping system is closed down, the device snaps a screenshot of the phone's last position and stores it.

Investigators could access "several hundred" such images from the iPhone and so establish its user's whereabouts at certain times, he said.

In a further design feature that can also help detectives, iPhone photos include so-called "geotags" so that, if posted online, they indicate precisely where a picture was taken and the serial number of the phone that took it.

"Very, very few people have any idea how to actually remove data from their phone," Sam Brothers, a mobile phone researcher for US Customs and Border Protection told the Detroit Free Press.

"It may look like everything's gone but for anybody who's got a clue, retrieving that information is easy."

Bad habits that can ruin your marriage

by Karen Chamchuk

There are many bad habits that can contribute to the deterioration of a marriage. These habits include, but are not restricted to, talking negatively about your spouse with your family of origin, infidelity, gambling addictions, substance abuse addictions, and reckless spending patterns.
Trash Talk
The first bad habit is talking negatively about your spouse to your family of origin. If you say enough negative things about your spouse to your parents and siblings, eventually they are going to start believing what you are saying.
If you paint a bad enough picture of your spouse, your family of origin may actually try to sabotage the success of your marriage. Furthermore, your own parents and siblings are not objective listeners. They are naturally protective of you and will always take your side in your spousal disagreements - even if you are in the wrong. If you really need to vent your negative emotions to someone, then choose a trusted friend or a professional - not your parents or siblings. People outside of your family can be more objective and will be able to tell you when you are overreacting to something your spouse did or said.
Infidelity
When spouses cheat it can be for one of two reasons. Number one, the person simply hasn't grown up yet and isn't mature enough to handle monogamy. Take note that this is not an excuse, it is simply an explanation. Or, number two, there are serious problems within the marriage and cheating is a response to these problems. Examples of serious marital problems may be an inability to show affection or frequently belittling a partner in public. Sometimes the cheating partner is so starved for attention and approval that they start to look for these things outside the marriage. Can cheating be described as a habit? Absolutely. Once the cheating partner realizes that he or she can get away with it, they often will be seduced into this behaviour again and again.  Infedelity within a marriage is one of the quickest routes you can take to the divorce courts. When the partner who is being cheated on learns of the infidelity, the result is often complete and total devastation of the marriage.
Gambling
Gambling is another addictive behaviour that can have a dramatically negative impact on a marriage relationship. Maybe your partner occasionally bought a lottery ticket while you were dating. Five years into your marriage, your spouse is spending up to $1000.00 a month on their gambling addiction.
If you are trying to save up for a down payment on a house or you are attempting to pay off a car loan, a persistent gambling habit can make you feel like you are running in place and getting absolutely nowhere. Your partner's obsession with choosing their lucky lotto numbers, making their daily sports picks, playing the slot machines or visiting the casinos may make you feel like you take second place to the addiction.  The non-gambling spouse will often feel responsible and will search for something they have done to make their partner turn to gambling.  Make no mistake: gambling is a serious addiction and requires serious first aid.  Getting help from a twelve step program or other support group is essential to the long-term health of a marriage relationship.
Substance Abuse
If your partner regularly stops for a few drinks on the way home from work or uses cocaine just to get through the day, then substance abuse is an issue in your marriage. When it comes to discussing day-to-day things such as your child's report card or the plumbing that needs fixing, your spouse is almost always not available. The top priority of the addicted spouse is not day-to-day concerns; their main concern is getting the next high or finding the next opportunity to drown their problems in alcohol. In fact, with substance abusers there is never a good time to discuss average, everyday issues. Consequently, it is nearly impossible to have a functional relationship with an alcoholic or a drug addict.
Reckless Spending
With the ready availability of credit cards and loans, out-of-control spending behaviours are a real problem in many marriages today. Some of us were raised in near-poverty situations where spending money on frivolous items simply did not happen. If this was your background, and you now have enough money to make impulse purchases from time to time, you may find it difficult to stop with just one impulse purchase. Perhaps you felt deprived your whole childhood and you vowed that if you ever had children, you would never deprive them of anything. Now that you are married with a family of your own, you are running up credit card bills like there's no tomorrow. This kind of behaviour can quickly become a source of conflict for a married couple.
In conclusion, it is obvious that bad habits can have a huge impact on the marriage relationship. Addictive habits eventually destroy the trust that is essential for a healthy marriage. If you find yourself engaging in one or more of these behaviours, seek help as soon as you possibly can. Think of reaching out and getting help to be essential first aid for your marriage.  Getting past denial and admitting that you need help is the first, and perhaps most important step towards getting your life, and your marriage, back on track.

On the go: Preaparing a healthy breakfast in 5 minutes

by Paola Fanutti

We've all heard it before. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. After slumbering for eight long hours, a healthy breakfast fuels our body with the vital energy and nutrients to keep us going until noontime.
Eating breakfast is a must for weight watchers, as routinely skipping breakfast is statically shown to contribute to overeating later in the day. But did you know that the American Dietetic Association also confirmed that breakfast eaters also function better cognitively in the morning than breakfast skippers?
And it really only takes five short minutes in the morning to whip up a nutritious, kick-start morning meal.
Tomorrow morning, instead of hitting the snooze button and hiding under the covers, why not try out some tasty breakfast ideas that will make you want to wake up early on weekdays?
Try starting your day with a protein-packed Peanut Butter and Strawberry Smoothie. Blend 1/4 cup of non-fat regular or soy milk along with half a banana, 1 tablespoon of light peanut butter, 2 or three strawberries and a couple ice cubes. Bananas are great sources of potassium and magnesium while milk provides Vitamin A and D and calcium. At only 160 calories a glass, savor a smoothie while taking in 7 grams of protein. If peanut butter and strawberry isn't your style, simply blend together a few tablespoons of yogurt, ice cubes and your favorite fruit for a creamy treat.
Need a five minute breakfast option that is a bit more substantial? A low-fat yogurt topped with blueberries or raspberries, along with a glass of orange juice and half a whole wheat bagel spread with light peanut butter is a great balanced breakfast. Consumed in under five minutes, orange juice and fruit provide anti-oxidants, Vitamin C, magnesium and potassium, while the yogurt is a great source of calcium and Vitamins A and D. Bagels provide whole wheat carbs and B complex vitamins, and peanut butter offers Vitamin E and protein, and makes a better bagel spread than other supposedly fruit based, sugar-laden jellies and jams.

Another excellent breakfast selection for those on the go are nutrient fortified cereals or muesli. Many breakfast cereals now contain dried fruit, banana chunks, and nuts for an extra dose of flavor, fiber and vitamins. Try topping your cereal with extra fruit, flaxseed or cinnamon. Cereals are great complex carb sources, whose energy is digested and released slowly. Cereals and muesli are packed with important B complex vitamins, like riboflavin, folic acidand niacin.

The fiber in breakfast cereals and muesli will keep you full until midday.
Oatmeal is another great choice for the truly time constrained, and can be microwave ready in under a minute and a half. Studies show that oatmeal consumption can help lower cholesterol, and the goodness of oatmeal supplies Omega 3 fatty acids and is an excellent fiber-rich, complex carb source.
Don't have time to eat at all and about to make a mad dash for the door? Take along an energy or meal replacement bar, which supplies many essential minerals and vitamins. You can take a minute and unwrap it during your walk from the parking lot to your work entrance before you start your day, or consume it at your desk while your computer turns on.
What are some breakfast choices to skip or consume very sparingly? Fried eggs, bacon or sausages, pancakes and syrup, muffins, donuts, buttered toast, and other fatty breakfasts will leave you more lethargic than energetic on hectic weekday mornings.
Preparing a healthy breakfast with a busy timetable is quick and easy, and best of all, will still leave you those precious few minutes to wait in the Starbucks drive through for that morning jolt of java to keep you awake during your monotonous Monday meeting.
A Starbucks 12 ounce sugarfree, skinny Caffe Mocha minus the whipped cream gives you 30% of your recommended calcium intake and 9 grams of protein along with your caffeine fix.
Eating on the go has become a pervasive fact of life in our busy, frenetic culture, but starting the morning with a healthy meal is still possible even for the truly time pressed. Preparing a healthy breakfast really only takes a couple of our morning's minutes, and even the busiest of us can find five minutes to spare for our health.
